A smile is happiness you’ll find right under your nose
— Tom Wilson
Lovelies, your smile is the key to your happiness. When I first heard this, I didn’t believe it. I mean, it sounds too simple to be true. Going through depression, your world changes around you. Suddenly, everything you see is no longer bright and sunny; everything you see is just the complete opposite. Depression can take the life out of you, literally, and metaphorically. It is amazing what simple actions do to our body.
Here’s my quick and simple to understand reasons why you should smile, every moment you can!
1. Smiling changes your mood
When I was in school, I always had a problem of getting sleepy in class. I realise that the reason why I was sleepy was due to a lack of oxygen entering my brain, since I was almost always thirsty. I didn’t like to drink water, so this was something I had to face in school. When I was fasting, it was even more challenging because I can’t drink water during the day to keep me awake, or snack on that candy to keep my energy boosted. So, I had a trick. I smiled widely to hide my yawn. When I first did that, I realise that I suddenly had a jolt of energy. I suddenly felt awake! It was amazing, so I kept doing that.
I even use this technique during my long drive back to my Johor home a few years ago. It works wonders.
Well, the scientific reason behind this is that our facial expressions communicate to our brains all the time. It has the ability to influence and send positive (or negative) signals to our brains, making us feel what we feel. To be even more specific, it’s not just facial expressions that dictate how we feel, but the rest of our body plays a part in that as well. Cool, right?
2. Smiling makes you more approachable
Going through depression is tough, but going through it alone is even worse than that. When you are depressed, people tend to stay away from you. It’s okay, they’re not wrong. People generally love to mix around with other people who send them good energy. Let’s look at it this way: When you already have negative energy in your life, would you find people who have negative energy as well? No. You tend to prefer people who have a much positive energy relative to you. In theory, energy transfers from a point of higher concentration to a point of lower concentration — so, if your body is filled with negative energy, you stick around people with positive energy so that they can provide you that transfer you need.
Smiling helps make you more approachable. Coupled with the first point, smiling helps you be more confident. Your confidence will draw the right energy to you, and in fact will help you feel better much faster than you realise. So, just keep smiling!
3. Smiling actually helps you re-train your brain for the better
After going through so much in life, your brain starts to develop new information and habits form in your life. These habits tend to be matching of your present situation in life. Smiling helps you re-train your brain, making it focus on positive experiences. Your brain will store this new set of information, and develop even more positive habits to make you feel better. You can read more about this when your read Shawn Anchor’s The Happiness Advantage.
All in all, smiling makes you feel great about yourself. So keep smiling, and keep “donating” your smiles to others.
When you feel great, so will your life be!
